Once again Maribyrnong Sports Academy students have performed well at the annual Don Deeble Rising Star awards night presented by the Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club.
Nominees for the Don Deeble Rising Star award are selected on a monthly basis throughout the year from February to November with the finalist coming together in January for a presentation night held at the Allegra Function Venue in Deer Park in front of 200 people.
Maribyrnong Sports Academy students who were nominated for monthly awards in 2017 were Table Tennis star Nathan Pellissier in February, Basketballer Paul Tsapatolis in June, Weightlifter Teagan Newman in August, AFL Number 1 draft pick Cameron Rayner in September also Basketballer and AFLW player Monique Conti in November. All five current and former students received a $500 grant for their nomination.
Maribyrnong College and The Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club congratulate the following former students on being selected winners on the night.
Monique Conti - equal runner up of the Don Deeble award and recipient of a $2500 cash grant. Monique had an amazing 2017 receiving the WNBL Rookie of the year award at the start of 2017 before being named in the Australian U19 Women’s Basketball team playing in the World Cup in Italy. Monique was also selected at Number 4 in the National AFLE draft by the Western Bulldogs and will play her first game in the match against Fremantle in Round 1 of the season.
Nathan Pellissier – equal runner up of the 2018 Don Deeble Award. Nathan also received a $2500-dollar cash grant of which will go towards paying for his 6-month training stint in Germany in the second half of this year. Nathan won the National Table Tennis title in 2017 and was inducted into the table Tennis Victoria Para Hall of Fame. In 2017 Nathan won three international singles titles, the Oceania, Korea and Taiwan titles and has been given the honour of being a baton bearer for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
