The Annual National Secondary Schools Team Tennis Challenge took place over the past week in Albury once again. Maribyrnong College entered both a boys and girls team once again with the boys looking for a 3-peat after winning the title the last 2 years.
The boys team comprised of Daniel Paveska, Mason Naumovski, Stefan Milenkovic, Sebastian Fota, David Mitreski, Benson Pisanelli and took along emergencies Dimitri Tsimiklis and Stefan Cvetkovic. Whilst the girls team included Harmony Mitsos, Gabriella Ioannou, Bianca Compuesto, Emily Ioannou, Mary Jayakody and Katelyn Kissack with Marli Klaumanns-Moller as the emergency.
Our underdog girls team went into the competition with a seeding of 6th out of the 10 teams entered but to their credit competed with some of Australia’s best players. Including in the opposition teams were the former 16 & under world champion Violet Apisah and current 16 & under champion Megan Smith plus a host of world ranked players across all the teams. Our girls fought hard all week and were unlucky to lose a close battle in the semi-final against Kelvin Grove State School (Brisbane), which in turn put us in the playoff for 3rd against private girls school Merridan College (Sydney). In a close encounter our girls took the win 4 rubbers to 2 and took out the bronze medal.
Meanwhile in the boys group we were seeded 3rd after winning 3 out of the last 4 titles. Our boys started strongly but lost a tight challenge against Marrayatville College (Adelaide) which took us out of the playoffs for 1st-4th. Although only playing for the 5th-8th positions we were so proud how the boys conducted themselves and won through to 5th place. The boys fought through fatigue and injury but showed plenty of resilience on the final day and did our school proud.
Overall another very successful week in Albury and a clear message to all of our students in the end was simple. Tennis/Sport will only be in your life for a period of time but the friendships and mateship you form playing in teams is with you forever. Take the memories and experience with you and learn from them. It’s not how many times you get hit but how many times you get back up and go again. We will be back in 2018 giving it another crack. Congratulations to all involved, we are truly proud of you.
