Thomas Ng - Badminton

Maribyrnong College year 10 student Thomas Ng has recently spent time training and playing through the South East Asia region.  Here he shares some of his experiences.

I left for Singapore late November last year and played two tournaments there. However, I unfortunately got food poisoning and spent much of my time resting in Singapore. I managed to play my matches but I could not find any energy to move or execute my shots with quality.

After Singapore, I travelled to Malaysia by bus to do training at Bukit Jalil Sports School for nearly two months. I stayed at their school hostel and all meals were provided by their school canteen. The intensity, quality and quantity of all the training was very high, with two training sessions done most days of the week, with physical training in the morning and on-court training done in the afternoon. Every week, there would be one rest day on Sunday where there was no training.

I got to meet the current world number one in badminton men's singles, Lee Chong Wei (photo), when after one of our gym sessions at Bukit Jalil, he was outside at the athletics track doing training. It was great as I got to take a selfie with him after he completed his training session.

There was one day where we all went to Sunway Lagoon, a water theme park located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We had a great time there and went on many fun and scary rides.

I also went to watch a few rounds of the SS Purple League, which is a professional badminton league where professionals play for a club. It was great as I got to see professionals play and learn from them.

Altogether, it was a great experience there training and competing in a completely different environment to training at Maribyrnong and competing around Australia. I really hope I get to go and train there again as I really enjoyed it and I think I really learnt a lot from it.
