Welcome to the Maribyrnong Sports Academy web-site. I trust that your tour of the site is both informative and interesting and conveys the excitement, pride and vision connected to this unique sports specialist school and education environment at government, community, sports industry and school levels.
While the physical facilities of the Sports Academy are impressive even by international standards, the strength of our Sports Academy lies in its holistic approach to each student’s academic, athletic and personal development. The Sports Academy is now home to more than 500 student athletes who compete in nearly 30 sports at a regional level or higher in the community. More than 170 of these student athletes are members of Victorian or Australian sports teams already.
A team of passionate, highly committed professionals, working together in an integrated manner, deliver the core elements of Sports Academy program. It is exciting to see the collaborative efforts of teachers, parents, coaches, mentors , fitness professionals, sports scientists, physiotherapists, sports psychologists, dieticians and athlete well-being and leadership consultants all contributing to assist young people achieve their goals in school, sport and life. Our visitors often comment on the tangible, vibrant and engaging culture they experience the instant they enter the Sports Academy.
The established “athlete friendly” culture at the college facilitates the delivery of a flexible curriculum to assist the achievement of student goals through tailored flexible learning plans and academic pathways. We are extremely proud of the level of partnerships that this education and sports initiative has generated - the Victorian Institute of Sport, Victoria University, Western Bulldogs and numerous State and National Sporting Organisations have joined forces with the Victorian Government and the Department of Education to help Maribyrnong College realise the vision of Victoria’s first government sports school. The expertise and credibility that these partnerships provide are invaluable in attracting young people to the programs offered.
While many schools in Australia have developed specialist sport programs from within their own resources, the Maribyrnong Sports Academy initiative has attracted significant state government investment for ‘state of the art’ facilities and program staffing. It is truly a project of state significance that now includes over $16 M of iconic indoor and outdoor sports facilities which provide an outstanding training and competition environment for all students at the college. The College is now entering another exciting building phase with the construction of the new VCE classrooms and Administration building due to commence in 2016 along with the new entrance to the precinct of Gordon St. The latest building initiatives will transform Maribyrnong College into a ‘cutting edge’ academic and sporting precinct.
Students are already travelling large distances to access the programs on offer at Maribyrnong College and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy, including many students and families who have relocated from country Victoria or interstate and others who travel across Melbourne to come here. We value the commitment and investment they have made in their future. We are also delighted with their efforts to integrate into college life and contribute to our high performance culture in academic and sporting pursuits. We recognise the strong contribution that our parents play in the development of the student’s academic, sporting and personal skills. The staff and I look forward to playing our role in the partnership as we share the journey of these young athletes towards their goals and dreams.
